La Mexicaine de Perforation
“LA MEXICAINE DE PERFORATION”
A Catacomb Comedy
A superfast, uproarious and hyperfarcical chase through the catacombs of Paris, some 300km of labyrinthine tunnel underneath the city streets. Cops and robbers, lusty young Canadians and live music performed by a ghost, not to mention the clandestine masters of the maze, La Mexicaine de Perforation. This is sharp-witted, superslick and surreal work dancing lightly on a spectrum between Scooby Doo, Feydeau and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Deep below the streets of Paris are the Catacombs, a labyrinth of tunnels that contain the remains of millions of people. When two Canadian backpackers venture into this eerie world, they find themselves caught between two warring factions: the “Cataflics”, a Catacombs police force that patrol the tunnels for intruders, and La Mexicaine de Perforation, a sinister group of tunnel-dwellers.
Based on the real-life “cataphile” subculture in Paris, La Mexicaine de Perforation is an international collaboration between Calgary’s Trepan Theatre and the UK’s AITHERIOS Theatre, inspired by the techniques of clown-master Philippe Gaulier. Performers Cheryl Hutton, Rew Lowe and Aaron Coates explore 300 kilometers of closed-off tunnels, from an underground movie theatre to a WWII-era Nazi bunker, spinning the comedic tale of an unexplored society.
A proud co-production of Trepan Theatre (Calgary) and AITHERIOS Theatre (UK)
